Jumbo survives Hakka Patas explosion

A wild elephant lying with serious injuries caused by an illegal hunting device called Hakka Patas laid by a poacher in Nanattan area in Mannar, was handed over to the Udawalawa Elephant Transit Home for treatment.

 Wildlife Conservation Officers in Vavuniya who rushed to the scene immediately with several officers from the Vanni Security Forces Headquarters called the Department’s Veterinary Unit. Four Veterinary Surgeons provided continual treatment for two days to save the life of the jumbo. However they decided to take it to the Udawalawa Elephant Transit Home for further treatment. The Wildlife Conservation Officers said it was the only wild elephant that ever survived a Hakka Patas explosion.
